Tigerwood Ltd chairman and managing director Tim Foster believes he has stumbled across the smallest plywood factory in the world.
He discovered the “No Name Plywood Factory” near Pizhou –700 miles north-east of Shanghai, China. “It is so small it doesn’t have a name. All the business is done in cash with apparently no written records,” he said.
The factory buys poplar logs from local farmers and dries them in the sun before turning them into plywood at the rate of less than 100m3 a month.
Mr Foster said: “The plywood is used for general construction. Using a spindle-less lathe, the logs are peeled to broomstick handle size, utilising every available part of the wood.”
The story of the No Name Plywood Factory has been posted at Tigerwood’s website www.tigerwood-uk.com.
