CIPTA Ltd has asked the market to support the first UK shipments of Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwood plywood from Indonesia.

About 500m3 of the product, produced by Tjipta Rimba Djaja, is due to arrive at Tilbury on January 18 for customers Finnforest and James Latham. An initial cargo of 30m3 is already being distributed by Timbmet.

Paul Romaine, director of CIPTA, said: “If the market supports this initiative we hope to do monthy volumes, so it’s important the work that has been done is encouraged by local government, specifiers and merchants.”

Timbmet Silverman said it bought the FSC plywood to offer reliable, affordable product that is guaranteed to be from legal and sustainable sources.

Dr Mike Packer, Timbmet Silverman’s director of responsible solutions, said: “We’re glad to report that product quality is good, price is acceptable and demand is healthy.”
