The construction products industry has enjoyed a strong start to 2005, according to a new “activity barometer”.

The tool, introduced by the Construction Products Association, revealed a sustained growth in sales volumes for the first quarter compared with a year ago. The barometer index read 55, above the 50 no-change mark.

Light side manufacturers faired the best with an index rating of 70, due to housing growth, increased repair, maintenance and improvement work, plus government investment in health and education.

The barometer expects sales volumes to be at about 58 during the second quarter, with light side business slipping slightly to 67.
