The Western-European Institute for Wood Preservation (WEI) says most European creosoting plants treating timber for professional and industrial end use are already complying with new EU regulations on the treatment.

The EU Commission recently banned the DIY use of creosote and imposed tougher composition restrictions on industrial applications.

WEI president Tommy Karlsson said complying with the new regulations together with more advanced treatment facilities ensures creosoted wood is safe and can be supplied to the market.

The institute’s members use creosote in vacuum-pressure plants to treat poles, sleepers, posts, fences and other products.
