The first of three electronic guides to the fast-growing cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction system has been published.

“Cross-laminated timber: introduction for specifiers”, published by TRADA Technology in consultation with sister company CCB Evolution, looks at how CLT is made and machined, as well as its material properties, common structural configurations and general erection principles.

Non-structural aspects of design including how to incorporate building services, thermal performance, airtightness, acoustic performance, cladding, durability/finishes and sustainability are also covered.

CLT, typically comprising spruce glulam elements to form a wall, floor or roof construction panel, is commonly used in Europe and has recently been gaining ex-posure in the UK through the likes of KLH and Eurban Construction.

Structural aspects will be covered in the additional wood information sheet “Cross-laminated timber: structural principles”, while more detailed guidance on CLT structure design will be included in “GD10: Cross-laminated timber – design guide for project feasibility”. Both these companion guides will be published in the near future.
