The housebuilding market has started moving again and structural insulated panels (SIPs) are set to grab a bigger share of the sector, according to Custom Homes

The company, which specialises in self-builds but has started to move into large-scale projects, is expected to see a large upturn in the volume of units built using its Eco Panels SIPs system this year. Last year it completed more than 150 residential units using Eco Panels.

Chairman Christopher Heath said the level of increase in the use of Eco Panels was as developers had been convinced of the benefits of SIPs and the energy efficiencies they offer.

Moreover, they are looking to shore up supplies before demand outstrips availability, said Mr Heath.

He also said developers are starting to commit to work again, with business being noticeably busier in the last three weeks. This, he said, was down to banks starting to lend to one another again and more fluidity in the financial markets.

“People were holding back a little but now that’s changing,” said Mr Heath. “Individuals are still being cautious in the main, but developers are starting to come back.”

Custom Homes’ Eco Panels use an expanded polystyrene insulation core sandwiched by two sheets of 11mm Sterling OSB3 from Norbord.
