Thousands of British indigenous trees are to be sent out to consumers who collect labels from Yeo Valley milk and yoghurt products as part of the company’s plant a tree drive.

One tree will be sent for every five labels collected or two in exchange for eight labels, with a cash donation of £2.50 or £5 to the Woodland Trust offered as an alternative.

“Trees are crucial to life on our planet,” said professional gardener Chris Beardshaw.

“There are so many things to be said for the planting of trees that anything that stimulates more of it is to be encouraged and with this scheme, even people without a garden can participate by donating their labels to support the work of the Woodland Trust.”

Official figures show that only 12% of Britain is covered by woodland compared to a European average of 44%, making the UK one of the least wooded countries across the continent.
