Rugby-based Häfele is distributing the Domino system made by Festool.
Domino, which has just won the German Top 100 prize for technology in 2006, is a hand-held router mortiser which cuts with a spindle running at 20,000rpm, instead of the traditional plunge saw blade of a biscuit jointer.
Festool UK sales manager Ole Held said the Domino system was selling worldwide at six times the rate projected when it originally went into production.
He said safety monitors in Germany had found that a high proportion of woodworking accidents were caused by biscuit jointers. He said the Domino’s use of a spindle meant there was no danger of a blade running on or jamming.
The Domino jointing mediums are solid beech and range from 5-10mm in thickness and are rectangular in shape and oval in cross section.
The hand-held router mortises five different cutting depths and routers an infinite range of angles from 0-90o.
A Domino demonstration kit has been assembled at Häfele’s regional office countrywide to show wood and panel workers how the system works.
