The Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) is on the threshold of being rejected by the Dutch government as meeting its sustainable timber sourcing policy.
MTCS was accepted earlier this year as meeting the Dutch timber procurement criteria, but after receiving objections from five environmental groups, including Greenpeace and WWF, Holland’s Timber Procurement Assessment Committee (TPAC) reassessed the scheme.
“TPAC has revised its judgment and holds that the MTCS does not conform to the Dutch criteria,” TPAC said.
It said Dutch environment minister Joop Atsma would now decide whether MTCS-certified timber should continue to be accepted.
