A £2m “eco school” has been constructed in Suffolk using energy-efficient timber frame technology.

The 1,200m2 single-storey structure of Beaumont primary school, Hadleigh, was built using Excel Building Solutions‘ Enhanced Vapour Transfer (EVT) technology and Tradis wall panels, floor cassettes and roof plates.

EVT wall panels are 220mm deep and deliver a U value of 0.165 W/m2K, twice the requirement of current building regulations.

Untreated western red cedar clads the exterior, while a living sedum roof provides a habitat for birds, butterflies and insects. A wind turbine, photo voltaic cells and solar panels produce energy.

The school is a member of Eco Schools, an international programme co-ordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education and managed in the UK by Environmental Campaigns, the charity which manages Keep Britain Tidy.
