The Estonian Ministry of Environment is cracking down on illegal logging.

Forestry machines suspected of being used in illegal activities are being seized and new surveillance devices have been installed to increase law enforcement capacity.

However, Estonian environmentalists are urging the government to go one step further. They would like to see changes in forestry, tax and criminal legislation to stop people thinking that illegal forestry can be profitable.

It is estimated that damage to forests due to illegal logging stands at €2.5m, down from €3.83m in early 2002.
