The suspension of valuable ramin, listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), has surprised timber industry officials in Malaysia, which exports the wood across the world.
Trade in ramin was added to CITES in 2005, effectively regulating trade in the wood, with quotas in place.
The Malaysian government is expected to hold a meeting to discuss the issue in Kuala Lumpur.
