The European woodworking industries, under the umbrella of the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries (CEI-Bois), are to hold an exhibition in Brussels on February 7-9.
Entitled “Tackle climate change: Use wood”, the exhibition will be held in the European Parliament as part of the woodworking industries Roadmap 2010 project which hopes to increase the use of wood products.
A handbook which stresses the environmental benefits of wood has been produced to run in tandem with the exhibition.
Both aim to show European decision makers the positive contribution of the wood-based sector and its products in tackling climate change, as well as a better understanding of the economic importance and its contribution to employment and welfare, in particular in rural areas.
CEI-Bois secretary-general Filip De Jaeger said: “In the light of the Kyoto protocol for the post 2012 period, the woodworking sector wants to show that European forests are substantially managed and are growing at a new rate of more than 15m per second, excluding Russia, thereby creating a substantial carbon sink.”
