Engineered I-beams have been used as the main structural framework for a new building at an award-winning Braintree school.

Excel Building Solutions‘s EVT technology was specified by architects the Bryant Harvey Partnership as a sustainable construction method for the extension at Notley Green Primary School.

The new building, which has a footprint resembling part of a circle, accommodates six classrooms, a library, a hall, staff room, stores, toilets, hygiene suite, cloakrooms and plant rooms.

Ebbw Vale-based Excel’s build solution used I-beams as the external walls, while Panelvent external sheathing board and plasterboard enclose the wall void, which is filled with Warmcel 500 insulation.

The roof structure also uses I-beams, which support a living green sedum covering on a plywood deck. External walls are clad in cedar.
