Fillcrete Masonite Beams have been used to create a dramatic curved roof on this new environmental education centre in York built by the charity The Friends of St Nicholas Fields.
Designed by architects Eco Arc of York, the hybrid roof consists of 300mm-deep curved steel beams used to produce the wave profile and 300mm-deep BBA approved Masonite beams laid perpendicularly between the steel rafters.
The weight-saving Masonite beams, which contain up to 65% less raw material than solid timber beams, reduced the level of structural support required. The roof was completed with insulation and two layers of plywood.
