Minimal environmental impact and high insulation performance were key criteria for the design and build of the Glencoe Visitors Centre for the National Trust for Scotland.
Another fundamental element of the brief was to use sustainable building materials where possible.
Based on a timber portal frame structure, the single storey building is insulated with Fillcrete‘s Warmcel 500 high performance insulation delivering U values of 0.15W/m2K and 0.16W/m2K.
Bitvent sheathing enclosed the external face of the walls and roof and Panelvent sheathing was used for the underside of the suspended floors. Internally, Paneline sheathing completed the floor structure.
The walls, floor and roof construction comply with requirements for EVT Technology structures.
Externally, the walls and some of the roofs are clad in Scottish larch and double glazed windows with laminated Scottish oak frames further benefit the thermal performance. In the winter heating is provided by a woodchip-burning boiler with the fuel sourced from local forests.
