Fire damage at James Jones & Sons Ltd’s £20m sawmill at Lockerbie is being assessed after a blaze broke out on June 16.

The company has admitted the fire will lead to serious knock-on effects to the mill’s production.

The fire occurred in one of the saw groups and was contained in that area by employees and the local fire brigade.

No-one was injured and no further collateral damage was suffered by either the buildings or the remainder of the sawline.

The extent of the damage within the Söderhamn Eriksson saw group and the implications for production from the sawline are being assessed by management and by the equipment suppliers who are now on site. ?

“There will obviously be some serious knock-on effects to production and stocks from the Lockerbie 3 mill, but it is too early to determine the full implications,” said joint managing director Tom Bruce Jones.

“Investigations as to the cause of the fire are ongoing. We are, of course, thankful that nobody was hurt in the fire.

“James Jones benefits from, and operates, multiple sawmills throughout Scotland and every effort will be made to minimise disruption during this time,” he added.

A further announcement will be made once the assessment has been carried out.

The Lockerbie 3 mill started production last autumn and has a single shift capacity of 140,000m³, with most output targeted at the English construction sector.
