Three county fire services have teamed up to boost the use of fire doors to protect life and property.

The initiative, supported by JELD-WEN UK Ltd, was launched by Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Services at the Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service Training Centre in Ollerton on October 19.

Public officials, housebuilders, housing authorities, the building trade and media were invited to the event, which included the first viewing of a new fire door information video.

The launch also emphasised the importance of correct installation and use of British Woodworking Federation Certifire fire doors.

Recent goverment research shows more than 400 people are killed in house fires every year and up to 12,500 injured.

JELD-WEN’s European marketing director Joanne Mitchell said although fire doors were used widely in public buildings, little emphasis was placed on their use in private homes.

She said: “Fire doesn’t discriminate by type of building – yet a fire door fitted in a bedroom or corridor could easily deter the spread of fire long enough to give householders enough time to escape, while also helping to prevent thousands of pounds of damage to property.”
