A new Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) process is now under way in the Europe and North Asian region (ENA-FLEG).
The process, which recognises that North Asian forests are threatened by illegal logging, involves a series of meetings culminating in a ministerial conference on November 24-25 in St Petersburg, resulting in a declaration and indicative action plan signed by 55 countries.
Bilateral, regional or international agreements and co-operative projects are expected to flow from the declaration.
The Forests Dialogue is organising an industry/NGO consultation event in St Petersburg on October 6-7, with the aim of producing a joint statement on illegal logging in time for the ministerial conference.
The UK Timber Trade Federation is participating in the consultation event to represent the views of the UK timber trade. Members with an opinion on tackling illegal logging in the ENA-FLEG region can contact Andy Roby on +44 (0) 20 7839 1891.
