FLEGT-licensed timber arrives at Tilbury

12 January 2017

Containers of the first FLEGT-licensed wood products to arrive in the UK have been opened at Tilbury.

The products, manufactured by Indonesian plywood, door blank and timber product producers, arrived in about 12 containers at the port and are being placed on the market by several UK importers.

The UK’s Indonesian Embassy is organising an event next Monday (January 16) to celebrate the arrival. Several other containers have been shipped to Liverpool.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner for the Environment Karmenu Vella has written a guest column in the latest issue of TTJ about the FLEGT licensing first.

“I’d like to congratulate all stakeholders for their part in reaching this stage,” he said.

“In particular I’d like to thank the private sector, including in the UK, which has been integral to the FLEGT VPA initiative and where, I am reassured, the timber trade expresses continuing commitment to it and the EUTR post-Brexit.”
