Timber features heavily in a striking new “flying saucer” shaped sports and leisure centre in Luxembourg.

Les Thermes, which resembles a spacecraft that has suddenly landed on the horizon, includes a timber roof and laminated timber shell clad in aluminium shingles.

Ochs GmbH undertook the timber engineering, while Dupont’s Tyvek breather membrane was chosen to protect the shell. The structure’s core is made from concrete.

The three-storey structure houses a swimming pool, sauna and fitness facilities.

Design was by Witry & Witry, Jim Clemes Architectes and Hermann & Valentiny et Associés.
