Scottish wood could be used in the construction of affordable homes on a 13ha site which Lochaber housing association has bought from Forestry Commission Scotland.

The land near Fort William has been sold under a preferential “sponsorship” scheme which is supported by the Scottish Executive.

Forestry minister Allan Wilson said: “Many people in rural areas find it difficult to acquire homes because of the cost, and we are keen to explore and develop ways of making access to affordable housing easier for them.”

He said the possible use of Scottish wood for the project would be good news for Scotland’s forestry and timber industries and for employment in rural areas.
