The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has identified six trade routes as being in urgent need of investment – with the M25 topping the list.

FTA, which represents 11,000 companies operating more than 200,000 goods vehicles, asked its members to identify key UK roads requiring crucial repair and improvement. And it says the government must treat these trade routes as a priority in its 10-year plan for transport.

The routes identified are the M25; the M4 London to Reading; the M1 London to Leeds; the M6 Midlands to Manchester; and the M62/60 Manchester to Leeds.

FTA says roads congestion costs the UK billions of pounds each year and investment in the key trade routes will benefit both industrial efficiency and the national economy.
