Architects have chosen timber windows to meet the technical and aesthetic challenges of a listed church building extension in Hertfordshire.
Cotterell Thomas and Thomas specified fully storm-proof casement windows, plus screens and doorsets from British Woodworking Federation member George Barnsdale and Sons Ltd for the extension to St Paul’s Church at Chipperfield. The old windows were metal casements with leaded lights.
Alan Gibbs, project architect, said: “Timber seemed the most appropriate as it would have been difficult to incorporate double glazing into the size of sections we would have needed to use with steel.”
Lincolnshire-based George Barnsdale supplied 14 casement windows, made using slow-grown softwood, two 5m high arch-topped screens and three part-glazed doorsets. All frames were factory finished, containing 14mm double glazing units.
