Ghana is to introduce new rules on public wood procurement affecting all government projects in the country, according to the Internatonal Tropical Timber Organisation’s latest market report.
The new law is expected to stipulate use of wood from verified legal sources and redefine export procedures in relation to verifying the legal source of timber for export markets.
The law is designed to protect the country’s forests, which the government says have been depleted over the years due to illegal harvesting.
Meanwhile, the Forestry Commission of Ghana is seeking an independent monitor as part its Voluntary Partnership Agreement signed with the European Union.
