BRE has kick-started plans to establish a Green Building Council by launching a prospectus and calling for founding members.
The move follows initial discussions between major stakeholders about forming a council, which would pool all groups currently trying to reduce the environmental impact of buildings.
BRE chief executive Martin Wyatt said: “If real transformation is to take place on the scale required, a national coalition is essential to promote and champion the design and construction of sustainable buildings.”
He said the council would be an industry initiative set up and run by stakeholders for the general good, with both “the will and the financing” to bring about real change.
A website, www.ukgbc.org, has been set up and contains a forum for expressing opinions on the idea.
BRE Environment managing director Dr David Strong has been tasked with establishing the council, the need for which was originally identified by the Sustainable Buildings Task Group.
