Greenpeace Australia Pacific is urging Australian timber buyers to stop buying illegally logged timber.
The environmental organisation claims that Malaysian logging company Rimbunan Hijau is bringing illegally logged timber from Papua New Guinea into Australia via its Brisbane subsidiary The Lumber Bank.
Greenpeace, which has been campaigning to stamp out illegal logging in Papua New Guinea for 10 years, has called on the Australian government to ban imports of illegally logged timber from anywhere in the world.
Meanwhile, Rimbunan Hijau has threatened Greenpeace International with litigation in The Netherlands and demanded that a report “The Untouchables – Rimbunan Hijau’s World of Forest Crime and Political Patronage” is withdrawn from the public domain. Greenepace International has refused to comply with the demand.
