Environmentalists have stepped up their battle against Australian timber company Gunns by recruiting Greenpeace to help target the firm’s important Japanese customers.
The Wilderness Society has brought Greenpeace on board to highlight Gunns’ old-growth logging practices to Japanese companies including Nippon Pulp & Paper, Oji Paper and Daio.
Greenpeace says several meetings have already been held with Japanese buyers and it expects to see a breakthrough in the coming months.
About 60% of Gunns’ total volume is hardwood pulp chip exports to Japan. Its operations account for about 80% of Australia’s hardwood chip exports.
