Haldane UK has helped put the finishing touches to golfer Colin Montgomerie’s new multi-million pound Scottish mansion.
Haldane was called in at the last minute after the project manager’s dissatisfaction with the timber handrail supplied by another company for the spiral staircase.
The handrail had been machined with a small curve and forced into position using fixings to create the spiral. The pressure was causing the balusters to buckle.
Within nine days Haldane had machined and installed 16 linear metres of solid ash handrail, 10 linear metres of straight handrail and 6 linear metres of horizontal curves.
Colin Montgomerie’s house was the third contract in six weeks where Haldane had been asked to correct sub-standard work.
“Too many contractors claim to be able to machine complex spiral and helical handrails at budget costs,” said Haldane managing director Forrester Adam.
“Unless you hand carve individual components, which can be a long and unpredictable process, you need a five-axis CNC machine to produce spiral handrail – especially the transitions which can be extremely complex.”
