HLD Ltd has designed and supplied a timber footbridge to provide access to a new Morrisons supermarket branch near Bristol.

Designers at Morrisons opted for the footbridge to avoid disturbing protected trees on the site after being impressed with two similar bridges erected by Gainsborough-based HLD on an adjacent plot owned by Prudential.

The 24m-long bridge cuts through the woodland in three 8m spans and features HLD’s Antislip decking and a ramp. It links Morrisons with a petrol filling station at the Cribbs Causeway shopping complex.

Mike Feehan, senior surveyor with main contractor Mowlem Building, said: “We weren’t allowed to disturb the trees or divide the copse with a path, so the architect decided we needed a raised walkway or bridge that wouldn’t affect the undergrowth. The two existing HLD bridges and ramp on Prudential’s part of the site suggested the ideal solution.”
