Factory finished timber windows have been supplied to a council refurbishment project designed as a test bed for environmentally friendly building practices.
The windows, supplied by British Woodworking Federation member Howarth Windows and Doors, were used in a Victorian end of terrace house fitted with a range of energy-saving products by Guildford Borough Council.
Howarth replaced the original sliding sash windows with eight units that were Egan-compliant, had a guaranteed paint finish and factory installed glazing. The specification met Part L of the building regulations, using wood from renewable resources and maintaining the architectural integrity of the house.
Project building surveyor Brian Baverstock said: “Choosing timber is beneficial from an environmental point of view while the factory finishing with its guarantee overcomes the problem of controlling quality on site.”
The property, called the “Ecohouse”, is now open to the public.
