A permanent ban on the export of logs is planned by the Indonesian government in a bid to protect its tropical forests.
A temporary ban on the export of logs for wood chips put in place in October 2001 is due to run out this month, but the government plans to extend this while it discusses permanent measures with the International Monetary Fund.
