Indonesian forestry minister Muhammad Prakosa has said he suspects Malaysian citizens are involved in illegal logging in his country.

Speaking during a meeting with Commission III of the House of Representatives, Mr Prakosa said his suspicions were aroused during a visit to border areas in Kalimantan. He saw heavy-duty logging equipment, which he believed belonged to Malaysian citizens from across the border.

He said nine Malaysians have already been arrested in Papua on charges of illegal logging, a problem he described as a “chronic cancer”.

Mr Prakosa promised the government would implement a new system based on intelligence to crack down on the crime. Operations will focus on the names of suspects
