Industry gears up for Fire Door Safety Week

10 September 2014

Fire Door Safety Week runs from September 15-21, featuring a range of activities aimed at raising awareness of the critical role of fire doors.

The week of activities kicks off next Monday with a seminar - Fire Door Safety - The issues and the solutions - at The Building Centre in London. The seminar, delivered by fire door industry professionals, including the London Fire Brigade and BWF-Certifire, will look at the safe use of fire doors and highlight common issues and misconceptions.

Arnold Laver is also actively supporting the campaign, holding a fire door seminar at its Mosborough office and raising awareness through its stand at 100% Design. Head of joinery David Oldfield will make visits and hold press interviews, and the company has also written to its local MPs to raise awareness and seek support for Fire Door Safety Week.

James Latham plc is also supporting the event, and calling for the industry to check that doors they are specifying are fit for purpose and carry out the necessary accreditation.

Group door manager Steven Dennard said the week was "the perfect platform to reinforce the importance of purchasing door blanks that stand up to their claims".

"Fire doors are a serious element of any project and it is the specifier's responsibility to ensure a decision is not made based on price alone as the ramifications are unimaginable. Based on technical and test data, there is only one choice," he said.

Also during the week, BM TRADA will stream a live fire door test at 11am on September 15; the Fire Door Inspection Scheme will offer £50 Amazon vouchers to anyone signing up to its diploma; Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service conduct fire safety audits at local businesses; door sealing systems manufacturer Lorient will hold a fire awareness open day in Newton Abbott; and Southampton City Council will use the Fire Door Safety Week toolkit to raise awareness in its housing service.

Fire Door Safety Week is a BWF-Certifire initiative.
