Peru has staged five International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) workshops as part of the development of a strategy for the sustainable management of mahogany.

ITTO’s latest Timber Market report said the five workshops, which took place during July and August in Iquitos, Mal-donado, Pucallpa, Tarapoto and Lima, were designed to gather information on existing sustainable management tech-niques for mahogany, as well as evaluat-ing the existing commercial stocks.

ITTO is aiming to use the information gathered at the workshops to establish a sustainable management strategy for mahogany, which would comply with the tree’s listing under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Elsewhere in South America, the fifth Mexico Forestry Expo will be taking place in Guadalajara on September 27-29.

The event will see forestry communities come together to discuss experiences and solutions affecting the sector, with the aim of promoting productive supply chains and promoting the sustainable use of Mexico’s forest resources.
