Aimed at architects, engineers, designers and wood specialists, the conference will open with a Case study of the Marine Institute in Galway presented by Ciaran O’Connor, assistant principal architect at the Office of Public Works in Dublin.
The research and administration headquarters uses wood throughout and the case study will include a panel discussion on the use of exterior and interior hardwoods and treated softwoods.
Two technical sessions will follow. In the first, entitled “Wood Fit for Purpose”, Luke Hughes & Co will talk about the right wood for the job, the BRE will discuss wood treatment and ProForest will give a presentation on sustainability.
In the second, “Re-engineering Wood Performance”, Gordon Cowley will speak on composites, Peter Vinden on microwave treatment and BSW on the acetylation of wood.
The conference will also look at the implications of any lack of knowledge and opportunities for training in wood science.
The event, which is preceded by a president’s reception and dinner on September 18, is supported by the American Hardwood Export Council, Wood for Good and Timbmet. It is endorsed by TTJ and will be chaired by Ruth Slavid, author of Wood Architecture and editor of AJ Specification.
