Japan and the EU are looking to impose tariffs on US imports after America failed to meet a deadline on repealing a law which distributes large sums of its customs duties to domestic companies.

The US missed a deadline on December 27 to remove the controversial Byrd Amendment, a law which has seen millions of dollars of anti-dumping duties collected from Canadian timber firms distributed among their American competitors.

Japan and the EU are to inform the World Trade Organisation of their intention to hike duties on a number of unspecified US products.

The EU said the retaliation is to protect the interests of European companies.
