Jewson says it is saving £52,000 per week in waste costs by a scheme to recycle and re-use more than 13,000 pallets a week.
Pallets from all 500 Jewson branches and customer sites are included in the initiative, which was first launched in December, 2008.
The company ensures that pallets are “backhauled” on empty lorries after deliveries to sites and from branches, then taken to one of three Jewson timber distribution centres at Grangemouth, Newport and Hull.
Pallets are then reintegrated into the supply chain using European Logistics Management, which redistributes them.
Jewson believes the scheme has the potential to cut an estimated 135,000 lorry miles per year.
