Littlethorpe uses piquia for its visual similarity to oak and is the first bus shelter manufacturer to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. A major customer is Leicestershire County Council.
The first structure for Clear Channel, which specialises in advertising-financed bus shelters, was installed near Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. Others will be supplied on demand, the company said.
Managing director Andy Robinson designs each shelter to blend with its local environment. He said: “Our clients are becoming increasingly concerned about where wood is sourced and how sustainable it is. To add to our environmental credentials we are working with Zeta Controls, the specialists in solar lighting to build timber bus shelters for the Scottish Borders Council fitted with solar powered lights.”
