A simulation software application that can help in the planning of various types of container ports has been launched by Swedish-based Kalmar Industries.

The Kalmar Terminal Development Unit, set up two years ago, has developed close links with existing and new customers as well as port consultants advising on terminal design and cargo handling solutions.

Jari Pirhonen, general manager of Kalmar Terminal Development, said: “Through simulation we can better assist any port considering such investments in selecting the best functioning alternative and in testing the viability of the choice.

“The simulating alternative will help find bottlenecks and pinpoint other problem areas before any changes are made or construction work is started.”

The simulation software, provided by CyberCube of Finland, enables Kalmar to make a more exact assessment of the machine capacity needed at a port and test the efficiency of various container handling systems in different systems.
