Wood-based panel producer Kronospan has won a green award at the Wales Business and Sustainability Awards.
The company won the Resource Efficiency in Business category in recognition of its recycling, high rates of waste recovery and reduction in carbon emissions at the Chirk production site.
“We have worked very hard at Kronospan to develop and improve our environmental practices and it is great to have this work recognised by receiving a national award, which is supported by some of the most important names in the environmental sector, such as the Carbon Trust and the Environment Agency,” said Kronospan’s environmental co-ordinator Iain Ferguson.
Kronospan uses 300,000 tonnes of waste wood every year and recovers more than 95% of its own processing waste. The company also says it sources all its virgin timber from sustainable sources and all its products are Forest Stewardship Council-certified.
The main energy source for its manufacturing is a biomass boiler, while a 30% reduction in lorry journeys has been achieved in the past two years.
