The last logs to be sawn by Södra from the Gudrun and Per storms have been processed into construction timber for the UK and Irish markets.
Five years ago the Gudrun storm felled 70 million m³ of forest in southern Sweden, while the Per storm in in 2007 felled a further 12 million m³.
Södra once had a total of 10 million m³ of storm wood stored at terminals, mills and vehicle roads.
On December 22 , its final storm logs were sawn at Södra Timber’s Varö sawmill after being collected from the Asige Terminal in Halland.
“The overall outcome is much as planned,” said Lars Woxneryd, Södra Timber’s environmental manager. “Even if the logs have been very black on the outside, the wood has generally been of good quality.”
Södra said close to 90% of the storm clearings had been replanted.
