Westminster City Council last year gave permission to property company Grosvenor to redevelop Newson’s Timber Yard on the Pimlico Road, but now tenant Travis Perkins has applied for a judicial review to challenge the legality of the council decision.
The company believes it has good grounds for contesting the decision in the courts. Local businesses and residents have been campaigning against the plans, deeming a redevelopment harmful to the character of the area and causing the loss of a historic timber business.
“Much of the materials used to build the Belgravia as we know it came from the timber yard,” said Travis Perkins on the campaign website it has set up.
“The yard is over 175 years old, the oldest of its kind in the country and a rare example of such a building still being used for its original commercial purpose.”
