One of the biggest names in UK timber window manufacturing – Blairs Ltd – has gone into receivership and the majority of staff have been made redundant.
The Scottish company, founded in 1908, had recently struggled due to cash flow constraints, according to a statement by receivers Ernst & Young on Blairs’ website.
“The receivers are speaking to third parties who may be interested in acquiring the business,” said receivers Fiona Taylor and Colin Dempster.
“However, in the meantime, the majority of the workforce have been made redundant with effect from January 10 as there are no funds to trade or pay wages going forward.”
Blairs, a British Woodworking Federation member and a founder member of the Wood Window Alliance, has a 130,000ft² manufacturing facility in Greenock with a capacity of 40,000 units per year.
The company, whose annual turnover was about £11m in 2007, employed 115 full-time staff and manufactured products including the Aurora casement range, Vortezx European tilt & turn window, Secured by Design products, as well as sliding sashes and doorsets.
