An action plan to create new markets for timber from trees killed by beetle infestation is under way in British Columbia.
The government has posted two 15-year, non-replaceable forest licences for 700,000m3 per year on its website. Successful applicants will have to construct new timber processing facilities, and/or expand existing facilities to meet the licence specifications.
The aim is to put large volumes of the “beetle-killed timber” to good use without disrupting existing markets for forest products and proposals submitted to date range from pellet production to home construction.
