A scheme to give financial assistance for the maintenance and replacement of old timber balconies in Malta has been extended to all localities in the country and the island of Gozo, rural affairs and environment minister George Pullicino has said.
According to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), more than 300 houses have already benefited from the scheme, which was launched in 1996, including clubs and philanthropic organisations and residents in Cospicua, Kalkara, Valletta and Siggiewi.
This amounts to €350,000, with applicants able to apply for funding to cover 60% of the costs of maintenance or of replacing aluminium balconies with traditional timber ones.
Residents from parts of Malta and Gozo not previously covered by the balconies scheme will be able to apply for funding from October from their local council or MEPA’s office in Floriana.
