One of the world’s most exquisite works of marquetry made by a royal cabinet maker to Louis XIV of France is to go on display in an exhibition at the Bowes Museum, Co Durham.

André-Charles Boulle’s creation will take pride of place in the museum’s exhibition, “The art of Marquetry: Paintings in Wood” which opens on April 18. The 87cm high panel, dating from about 1690, is mounted in an English cabinet made of ebony and exotic woods, on a carcass of oak.
