Bow timbers from King Henry VIII’s flagship the Mary Rose are to be raised to the surface in an operation financed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The bow and anchor were left on the seabed in Portsmouth Harbour when most of the hull was raised in 1982.
The MoD decided to finance the dive as part of a proposal to widen the harbour channel for the navy’s planned new aircraft carriers.
Historians are expected to gain a greater understanding of the ship after examining the raised section.
Remaining timbers at the site will be reburied in the silt to protect them.
