Outgoing Californian governor Gray Davis has signed a new law which will allow state water quality officials to prevent logging in sensitive areas.
The law, criticised by the timber industry, is expected to create restrictions on timber cutting near salmon streams during wet winter months and along steep slopes prone to erosion.
