Metsäliitto, which suspended operations at its Kyröskoski spruce sawmill a year ago, has announced the site is to close with the loss of 62 jobs.

Statutory labour negotiations with mill staff started in January and have now been completed.

The company blamed overcapacity in European sawn timber markets for the closure and said negotiations had failed to identify a profitable solution.

“On the basis of calculations concerning the preconditions for profitable production and the sufficiency of competitively available spruce and pine logs, a solution could not be found,” a spokesperson said

The mill produces 200,000m³ of sawn timber, half of which is sold abroad, while 25% is supplied to Metsäliitto for processing and the rest for domestic sales.
